When reinforcements finally arrived a couple months later, they were sent to defend an airstrip being built by the Seabees in Western Samoa. A few weeks later the harbor was shelled by a Japanese submarine. He and only about 400 other men scrambled to fortify the island. He taught himself to be a radio operator and was on duty when they received the message that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. USMC Sergeant Bruce Boydston enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1939 at age 18 and was sent in early 1941 as part of the 7th Defense Battalion to defend the Tutuila Naval Station in American Samoa.
